In early 2005, I began using my new blog, Panopticist, as an outlet for a series of obsessively detailed magazine mashups and magazine-cover spoofs: Us Weekly in the style of Harper’s Magazine, for example, or Entertainment Weekly reimagined as something called Understatement Weekly. Almost immediately, these covers started getting picked up by prominent sites like Gawker, Boing Boing, and Design Observer, earning me a level of Internet fame as well as some respect in high places: Someone eventually showed a few of the covers to Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter, who asked me to contribute some new ones to V.F. (A few months later, Graydon hired me to be his online editor.) I continued the series on Panopticist and in V.F. for the next few years.
